Course Supplies:  Click Here for Responsible Driver Textbook Index

1. For each class, students must bring a pencil or pen, a folder with paper, or a spiral notebook.

2. The textbook, Responsible Driving, will be checked out to each student for the duration of the course. Students are responsible for loss or damage of the text at a replacement cost of approximately $30.

3. The Idaho Drivers Manual will also be issued to each student; it is theirs to keep.

Classroom Attendance: Each student is required to receive a minimum of 30 hours of classroom instruction. This course is scheduled to run for 30 classroom sessions of 1 hour each. If a student misses a class, they will need to attend the make-up day(s) scheduled for March 23, 24, 25 from 3:30-4:30. If a student misses more than 3 class sessions, he or she fails the entire course.

Driving Attendance: Students will be responsible to sign up in class for drive times the week before in class. Drive time increments are in ½ hour time slots. The student will need to set up 12 total drive times with a driving instructor. Each student is required to complete 6 hours of behind the wheel instruction. In addition, they are required to be in the car observing for at least 6 hours. Students will pair up with somebody else so they are together for each drive. Being at the scheduled drives on time and arranging to be picked up on time are critical issues. If a student has an emergency whereby they cannot drive at their scheduled time, it is his/her responsibility to find a substitute student that will switch drive times with them. They need to switch with someone in the same driving session. A student may miss one drive with a warning. Anyone missing a second driving session without finding a substitute will fail the program.

Tardies:   Two classroom tardies equals one absence.

One driving tardy equals one absence. Next tardy or skip and the student fails.

Overall Course Grading: State law requires that each student earn an overall grade of B (80%) or above to pass the course and receive a driver's license. The grade is determined by performance in three areas. Each area will contribute 1/3 of the final course grade. The passing grade in each area is 70%. (If you get a 70 in one area you must get a 90 in another area to make the state average)

1) Attitude

2) Classroom written work and testing

3) Behind the wheel performance and testing

Classroom Grading: The grade for classroom work will be based upon total points earned from quizzes, assignments and tests. A percentage will be calculated and a letter grade assigned according to the following scale: There will be a final written exam which must be passed with an 80% or better.

90% to 100% A

80% to 89% B

70% 79% C

Below 70% F

Behind-the-Wheel Grading: Grades will be based on how the student performs in the different driving tasks. The following grade scale is used:

Below Basic Below 70%

Basic 70% 79%

Proficient 80% 90%

Advanced 90% 100%

Attitude Grading: Everyone will start their attitude grade at 100%, points will be deducted for:

1) Not following class rules

2) Tardiness to class and drive sessions

3) Lack of serious concern for laws and safety issues

4) Disruptive behavior while observing in the car

5) Not participating in classroom activities

Class Rules:

1) Be on time for every class and drive.

2) Late assignments are not accepted unless they are make-up from an excused absence.

3) Enter the building and go directly to the classroom and sit quietly in your seat.

4) Students must begin and end driving at the same location.

5) Be polite and respectful to the instructor and other students.

6) Bring supplies to class and car each session.

7) If the student is seen in a moving vehicle without their seatbelt on they fail the course.

8) Treat the school property with respect: building, classroom, textbook, and vehicle.

9) Wear proper driving attire: sandals must have backs on them.

10) lf your permit says you wear glasses. You must bring your glasses to all drives.

11) You may bring a drink or water bottle to class as long as you are appropriately responsible for and respectful of the privilege.

12) Notify the instructor well in advance of any scheduling conflicts regarding class or driving times. If any accommodation is possible, advanced awareness will be helpful.

13)Cell phones must be shut off during class or BTW sessions.  If cell phones vibrate or ring during the session, the cell phone will go in the trunk for the first offense.  Second offense and the student will fail that class session.

1. A permit does not allow a student to drive with a parent until completion of the class.

Then, the student can apply for a license. The student must be accident and ticket free at the time, or the supervised instruction permit is cancelled, the student must obtain a new permit, and the six month period starts over.
